B Corp Certification

A Certified B Corporation is a for-profit company that has met social and environmental standards developed by B Lab, a non-profit organization established to measure and certify socially responsible businesses.  B Lab not only measures a company’s environmental footprint, but also the company’s entire social impact by requiring accountability to every stakeholder in the business rather than just the shareholders.

According to the “B CORP DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE” on the bcorporation.net website, the following is a summary of what it means to be a B Corp.:

B Corp “envision(s) a global economy that uses business as a force for good.  This economy is comprised of a new type of corporation -  the B Corporation - which is purpose-driven and creates benefit for all stakeholders, not just shareholders.”

“As Certified B Corporations and leaders of this emerging economy,” they “believe:

  • That we must be the change we seek in the world.
  • That all business ought to be conducted as if people and place mattered.
  • That, through their products, practices, and profits, businesses should aspire to do no harm and benefit all.
  • To do so requires that we act with the understanding that we are each dependent upon another and thus responsible for each other and future generations.”

Quite frankly, we could not have said it any better at Doo Dah Apparel, so we let the experts at B Lab speak for themselves.  As often as not, our blogs are an exercise to understand a particular issue, movement, or anything that we believe the textile or apparel industries are doing particularly well and responsibly.

While Certified B Corp is a mark of excellence in the garment industry, it is also providing a golden standard to over 150 different industries doing business in 80 countries with 6,000 companies to date meeting B Lab’s standards.  Like golden acorns in a field of oak trees, we’re hoping the era of the B Corp is upon us.
