We’re Taking a Break!
And we’re not talking about Ross and Rachel here. It’s vacation time! Doo Dah Apparel will be taking two weeks off this summer from Monday, June 30th, to Monday, July 14th.
It’s too hot outside to work, and since most properties in Los Angeles were built before central air conditioning, it’s too hot inside, too! Those little wall units just don’t cut it when the temperature hits 90°. Believe me, no one wants to see me checking for mail in a wet T-shirt! The kids in our neighborhood shriek, cover their eyes, and run for cover! Who can blame them.
While sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint are two of our primary objectives as a business, creating a healthy, productive and satisfying environment for everyone we work with is just as important. That means taking ample time off to enjoy life, which is the real reason we work, anyway.
In addition to our summer break, we also take three weeks off at the end of the year when it’s no longer possible to ship in a timely manner for the holidays. We also promote three-day weekends almost every week, Friday through Sunday. If the newsletter we send out on Friday is ready to go on Thursday, there should be no reason we need to work on Fridays. Working Mondays through Thursdays should be sufficient to accomplish our objectives. We will also limit our workdays to seven hours.
Our schedule will be packed when we return to work in July. From manufacturing our own brand of clothing to figuring out ways to advertise effectively, including creating a zine to help us engage our target market, we’ll have our hands full. But for now, it’s time to rest a bit, put our feet up, and make some homemade ice cream.
